Lady Astor, whose inspiration came from Rachel and Margaret McMillan, the pioneers of Nursery Education, opened the Margaret McMillan Nursery School in 1935. After visiting their nursery in Deptford, Lady Astor was anxious to set up a similar one in Plymouth and bought and converted 24 Hoe Street for this purpose. Apart from some modernisation, the building and some of the fixtures remain the same today as they were in 1935.
Ethos
We operate as a non-profit making charitable trust with a board of trustees who meet regularly to support the staff and oversee the aims and ethos of the nursery.
We aim to provide a happy, secure, friendly and caring environment where you can leave your child, knowing that he/she will have the opportunity to grow emotionally, intellectually and physically whilst enjoying a wide variety of activities.
Not only are their practical and learning skills developed, but also priority is given to developing their social skills, self confidence, independence and individuality allowing each child to flourish. By establishing relationships with other children and adults, they learn consideration for others and good manners. |
